GLPI and the English language market

I think a large number of people are turned away by the lack of English documentation of GLPI.  Only those of us that are willing to do some google translating (or forum posts) discover the true power and utility of GLPI.  This prevents people with a lot of talent from contributing to GLPI.  I think a large effect of this can be seen directly in the number of forum posts.

I know that when I first started it was a bit daunting, as a large majority of the documentation is in french (wiki included).  I can see it being difficult to get a boss to sign off on something that has little documentation.  Luckily, once I showed my boss what GLPI could do I got his approval.

I am going to begin updating the english portion of the wiki to the best of my ability.  I know it will take a while alone, but if a few people do it it will go by a lot quicker.  So I am asking for help.  The ultimate goal is to make the english documentation equal to the french documentation.  I believe that once the English documentation is on par with the French Documentation, we will see a large influx of English users.

Thoughts?

Re: GLPI and the English language market

You are right !

We called on several times for translators without sucess...

Maintain documentation is a  very difficult and hard task, but maintain translation is harder.

Contributors are needed and welcome.

Re: GLPI and the English language market

I know absolutely no French but have been using google translate and then fixing the grammatical errors as they pop up.  This works extremely well most of the time but of course this is not 100% dependable. It would be great if I could pass it along to someone that does in fact know french to make sure I did not misinterpret what was intended to be said.

Re: GLPI and the English language market

I suggest that you make a forum post each time that you make a documentation change.  Or if the moderator of this forum could make a sticky thread called "Documentation".
I am in a similar situation in that I don't know French and the google translation is not great.  I know that it is a pain, but we all need to spend a little bit of time each day to do some documentation.  Even if we put up what we think something means and it is incorrect, hopefully someone can tell us the true intent of the feature.

Re: GLPI and the English language market

Could we possible have a sub forum for documentation?  Keep things a little cleaner.

Re: GLPI and the English language market

Plight Ill try to post things here esp on plug-ins as I dive deeper into GLPI.

It is a shame that there isnt a larger En. user group as GLPI is the best of breed IMHO and ive setup many many apps open source and commercial of this type.

Re: GLPI and the English language market

Greetings!

I am translating the Plugin wiki pages.  I have translated as far as dumpentity.  Some plugins were translated already, but most were not.  I have probably done about 10 so far.  I don't speak French, but Google translate really does work well.

I plan to translate all plugin wiki information.  Without the English translations, I would not know what the plugins can do.  They are very powerful!

Pmaxx, if you translate more, please post in the plugin translation thread so I can update the master list.

Re: GLPI and the English language market

You have not post in the right section.

Inventory/software
Clic on red +
and  Computers   ^ in name
(name not empty)

You'll see for each software the name of the computer.
