Installing VMware Tools (vmx-09)

Any ideas how to install vmware tools?
I am running GLPI on Ubuntu Server.  I have gone through the normal procedure, but it still says not installed.

Initiate tools
Move to tar file to /tmp
tar the installer
run the installer -d

It shows it's installing, but if it does install, it's not registering through vCenter.

Figured it out.  My root dir didn't have enough space.
