override tab?

Hi there!
   Was looking into writing a "quick" plugin to add some additional information to the Software tab on a Computer item, and the Installations tab on a Software item.

   Is it possible to override the definition of a stock tab from within a plugin, or is my only option to add a new tab onto the Computer and Software items that contains the info I'm after?

On a side note, while I've been loving GLPI so far, I was surprised at how non-trivial it is to write a plugin just to add a tab to an item.  I've spent several days just doing the research.  By comparison, I was able to add a custom page to OCS in just a couple of hours.  Does anyone have a tutorial or guide for writing a GLPI plugin against a fairly recent version?  I'm running 0.83.6.
