Tracking a system's environment

I am trying to track whether a server is production, staging, or development.  I have been using the parameter plugin to store this information, but it is very difficult to generate reporting from this plugin's data.  What is the recommended way to track this information?  Are most people using the Status field?  Any help is appreciated.

If you use the status field for this purpose, does it cause issues if you open tickets against assets?  I thought the status field would be used to indicate if an asset was in a non-operational status based on an open ticket.  Am I wrong in this assumption?  Thanks.
