Principle of software inventory

Hello, I have a question on what principle is used to inventory programs?
I understand correctly that the agent scans the registry and takes data about the installed software?
If portable software is launched on a PC, then the agent cannot detect such software?

Maybe someone has a solution on how to account for portable software on your company’s computers?
