How to customize GLPI mydashboard plugin

I'm interested in developing a new widget that displays a pie chart on the dashboards. I've reviewed the existing code and documentation but am unsure about the specific hooks or methods to use for adding custom widgets, particularly for a pie chart.
Any examples or documentation references would be greatly appreciated.
