Need to limit a custom field number of characters

Hello,
I created a custom field "text Area" using the Additional fields plugin, now I want to limit the allowed character number in it.
I used PhpMyAdmin to access the database, set the type of "label" to VarChar and set "Value/size" to 100 but I still can increase this number of characters.

Can you help please?
