Clone an asset with a unique field - How?

Hi everyone,

I have added an item to my assets and would like to clone it so I don't have to fill in all the fields for additional units. Usually, this works fine, of course.

However, I have chosen to set the 'serial number' field of the asset to have to be unique (to prevent assets from getting registered more than once).

Is there a way to clone items anyway with this fields unicity in place? Can I perhaps specify somewhere not to clone a specific field? Or is my only option to disable the fields unicity while cloning items?

Could you add an asset template instead (Templates button at the top of the asset page), leaving the unique fields blank, and then create new items using that template?

Otherwise, it does seem like the cloning feature should remove the data for fields restricted by the unicity settings when creating the clones. This functionality would need to be added to the code.
