Clarification Regarding Update Directions

Hello All,

I am brand new to GLPI and have not used Linux/Apache in years.  This question may be obvious and I'm just missing it.  Our server is currently on version 10.0.0 and running on Ubuntu/Apache2.  I want to update to 10.0.5 but am a little confused by the directions.  It directs you to upload and extract the new version to the www\glpi folder, then use a web browser to go to that location and choose upgrade instead of install.  My confusion www\glpi is where the current install of glpi is.  Do I upload and extract overwriting what is currently there?  Or should I be extracting to a different folder and then some how directing a url to that folder to initiate the update?

Hi Daniel

In my experience the content of www/glpi does not contain the data, only the app. So overwriting that folder should grant you the new version, without destroying your current install. If you then navigate to the URL you mentioned, you will choose Upgrade. If you decide to click "Install" over there, you will destroy your instance and build a fresh one. This is my understanding. So please do this with caution, and make sure you have backups. This whole explanation is written from experience with other lamp stack applications.

Please do not just overwrite your existing GLPI folder. This leaves old code files that may have been removed or moved in the newer version and it will cause issues.

The documentation for updating can be found here:

As always, make a backup of your database before attempting an update.

1. Download the latest GLPI version from the GitHub's releases page (choose the download that doesn't say source)
2. Rename the existing GLPI folder to something like "glpi-10.0" just so it won't conflict with the new version
3. Extract the downloaded archive of the new version of GLPI where the old folder was and with its original name
4. Copy the contents from the config, files, marketplace, and plugins folders from the old GLPI folder to the new one. These folders contain plugins, database config, security key, documents, etc.
5. Open GLPI in the web browser and follow the update wizard or use the GLPI CLI tool to complete the update
6. If the update was successful, you can remove the old GLPI folder.

Hello CConrad96!

Just in time.  I was planning to do the update in the next 30 minutes (just got into the office).  So that clarification was just in time.  Those directions are much more clear and detailed then what they have in the 10 documentation 

I'll use the process you recommended.

Upgrade successful!  Updated and all working correctly.  I did have to locate the db name, user, and pw but that can all be found in the config file that was backed up.

Hello,

Actually now looking at what you sent vs. what I saw, it is the same but I was working out of the Install/Update area under Install Wizard.  Because it seems to be the end of that section when you move on to Timezones, I did not realize there was another Update section.
