Generic asset/asset fields

Hi.

I see that this question has been posted before, but I disnt find any answers that I understood.

1.
Am i blind, or is it not possible to add generic assets? (Like cameras, cars etc) The only way I found to do this is to change the locales/en_GB.php file...

2.
Is the above mentioned option the only option to alter the fields in an asset?

3.
Is there any plans for adding these features in the future?
