Questions and Comments

GLPI 0.65, OCS 4014

I have some questions about GLPI that I can't find answers to in the help document, which is a little brief and roughly translated.  I'm hoping that someone here can help me out.

1) What is the intention of the "Update Source" field in the detail for a computer?

2) What is the intention of "Network Point" when adding a network port?

3) What is the difference between "Global" and "Unit" management as it appears throughout the program?  I sort of understand the intent from the help files, but I'm not sure how setting something to "global" or "unit" affects how it is handled by the software?

Comments:

- There needs to be an easier way to add dropdown items.  I understand the importance and convenience of the design, but the interface is a real pain.  If I want to add a network device, I have to first remember to make sure the device type exists, then see if the manufacturer exists, then add the model, then add the firmware, and then maybe I'll realize that I have to add a new location.  I find myself constantly going back and forth between the dropdown setup, the companies management page, and the devices that I'm configuring.

- There should be some sort of option to not import all printers from OCS.  We have about 10 shared network printers here, and GLPI blindly imports everything from OCS, so it looks like we have a hundred printers.  Which printer drivers are installed on a computer is not a concern to me.  Physical printers are what's important.  OCS does record the port for each printer, so it would be cool if GLPI could be made to only import printers that are directly connected to the machine (e.g. LPT1, USB001, etc).

- The Links idea is kind of clever, but needs some work.  If I define a link for network devices like http://[IP], then it will add the link even if no IP address is available (which would be the case on an unmanaged switch, for instance).  It's also annoying that it adds a link for every single port, even if the device only has one IP address.  So, for instance, I have a 24 port switch with one IP address used to manage it.... in the links page for the device there is one valid link and 24 'http://' links to nowhere.

- It would be nice if we could add clickable links per device to support and warranty pages.  Yes we can simply add the text to the notes page, but being able to view warranty info and then go to the relavent support page in one click would be nice.

Re: Questions and Comments

- update source : field to say update from microsoft Website or inetrnal WSUS for example or anything else.
- netpoint is the hole where you put your netork cable on the wall. maybe wrong translation
- global : could be connected to several items - unit - could be connected to only one item

I wondered what netpoint was. haha.

Yeah it'd translate to "Drop", "Jack Number" or maybe even "Patch", though patch would be kinda obscure. Generally I think "Drop" or "Drop Number" might be clearest.

Re: Questions and Comments

i managed somehow to understand that netpoint idea, but while making connection between computer ports and network (switch) ports, i've found that :

i can write the netpoint to the port of the computer, when the location on netpoint and computer is the same- great,  less possibilities to make mistakes

then i can connect computer port to another ethernet port of network device (switch)

but when i disconnect computer port from switch port, the netpoint of computer port is cleared.
i would suggent not to clear it automatically, as a can change the switch connection leaving
connection in location untouched. and information about netpoint of computer port is rather vital,
and should not be erased automatically. maybe add anoother link "disconnect and clear netpoint"

i just commented two lines in one php file, and  i'm quite happy now, but i'm afraid i
forget to patch the next version of glpi

and, thanks. glpi is superb piece of software.

it's a pity is undocumented, and not about how to use it, but what was the authors ideas about using the soft when they introduced "location dropdown (location has hierarchical - tree like structure)",
what is status meant for, etc etc. just an example how authors have configured glpi for they use.
it would be easier to made own configuration when one understands what is the idea behind a feature , dropdown or field.

the same as netpoits, just few words what it is, ad as it should be used
