status information from network devices in GLPI. How?

When I go to Home -> Assets -> Network devices, select a managed switch, and then go to 'Network ports' I see all the network ports (which I added). Here there are columns like 'Internal status', 'Number of I/O bytes', 'Connection', etc.

I assume there's a way to get these updated automagically, but I haven't figured out yet how. My switches can be polled via SNMP, and I've gathered the 'GLPI Inventory' plugin has something to do with this, but I haven't been able yet to piece together how.

Is there someone here who has this up and running, and who can guide me a bit?
