Another approach to select cartridge model by printer

Hi, I'm trying to make two related dropdowns with printers list and compatible cartridges models.

Actually having hard times with it I've seen developers suggestion to use category/subcategory plugin for GLPI as well

My problem is very similar, it is the same logical structure but slightly other context.
I've also tried to make it with custom fields plugin, but other than making parent/child records in single dropdown it has no other options.

So is it another approach to select cartridge model by printer?
