Printer and Switches

1.) is it possible that we can inventory LAN switches ?

2.) is it possible that we can inventory Physical Printers only ....because GLPI is getting the physical printers but also getting the Document writer such as:-
Microsoft XPS Document Writer
Microsoft Office Document Image Writer

is it necessary if we want to get perfect inventory of printer then we must connect our printer with print server ?

Re: Printer and Switches

1/ yes with tracker plugin (HP and Cisco switchs only).
I think you should wait for next version of tracker which will go out soon

2/ no OCS inventory all printers installed on workstation
No necessary to have print server

Re: Printer and Switches

What about other switches ? and un branded switches ?

""""no OCS inventory all printers installed on workstation""""
Suppose one printer installed on muliple PCs so does OCSng show all installed printers on PCs as a printer if yes then it will be confusing ....

Re: Printer and Switches

for printers, set the ocsng in sync with global fashion
If one printer installed on PCs x has the same name on all this PC, no problem (eg Printer0001)
it will appear once in GLPI, attached to X PCs

Re: Printer and Switches

setup > oscng mode > import option > printers = Global import

Now if two printers have the same name, it will appear only one printer in Inventory > printers attached to 2 PC

But for that, your printers must be named and not have the driver name for name (ie hp laserjet xxxx)

Re: Printer and Switches

you mean if a printer name Printer-1 is installed on PC1 and same name of Printer-1 is installed on PC2 so the GLPI shows us one printer which is Printer-1 ?

If Yes thats mean if 2 different Printers are installed on two different PCs on LAN with same name then GLPI will get it as one snigle Printer in it ?

Re: Printer and Switches

yes exactly

(only if you choose global import in GLPI)

in my company, each different printer is installed with an unique name (Printer001, Printer002)
If Printer001 is installed on 2 PC, it's called Printer001 on the 2 PC

Re: Printer and Switches

In our installation printers are mapped using group policy based on a computers location (as defined within AD) and show up for the user with names like:

MFP-CEN-CSS,
or MFP-CEN-RPT

but within GLPI I am receiving many copies of the same printer like:

MFP-CEN-CSS on HPX-DC3 (from CSS006M) in session 0,149
MFP-CEN-CSS on HPX-DC3 (from CSS006M) in session 1,117

(where HPX-DC3 is a print server and CSS006M is an end users computer)

This is with Printers set to Global Import within ocsng mode.
GLPI is version 0.71.1
