Create a new kind of device

Hello.

I would like to know if it is possible to create a new kind of device. Appart from computers, monitors, printers, etc. I would like to control other kind of assets: services to users (which depend on servers, operating systems, etc.), communications (which depend on routers, switches, etc.), UPS, air conditioning, safe box (for storing backup tapes), etc.

Is it possible to have a generic device? Where you can put its name, description, person in charge of it, link to another device, etc.?

Is it possible to create a plugin which appears inside the Inventory menu (not as an extension of a currently device type), as a new kind of device?
