Install software does not associate a license. Normal? (0.72RC1)

Hello. I am trying to figure out how the "install software" function of GLPI is intended to work, with respect to the license-tracking function.

Are the "install software" and "assign license to computer" processes separate, so that we must perform them independently?

For example, I do this process:

1. go to Central > Inventory > Computers

2. select computer named PC-1 (click name to show record)

3. go to Software tab of PC record

4. At bottom, choose "MS Office" from popup next to "Install" button, and second popup appears. I choose "2007" and press "Install".

OK, now the computer record shows that Office is installed. However, there is no part of this process to assign which license it uses. On the other hand, if I start to my list of software, and assign one license for Office 2007 to a PC, that process does not cause the software to show up as "installed".

Must I do both "install software" process and also "assign license to computer" process independently?

Or am I using GLPI incorrectly?

(We are trying to enter data manually, in order to understand GLPI better.)

Thank you.

Yes

Installation is a technical stuff (doesn't requires a license)
Buying a License is a financial stuff (doesn't requires a installation)

When you install a software, GLPI don't know if you need a license (free or cormmercial) and which type a license it is (oem, box, network, volume or site, ...)

+

P.S. And you don't really need to "assign license to computer". Only if the license if affected to one computer only (oem or box)

Re: Install software does not associate a license. Normal? (0.72RC1)

Thank you, remi, that makes my understanding better!

P.S. The main reason we want to track what specific license is assigned to what computer, is because some software packages do stupid/annoying things like network-check the license serial number, and cause intentional malfunction if 2 machines are using the same license code, etc.

So I think the "assign license to computer" process helps us avoid this problem.
