'other' assets (non - IT) and amortization question(s)

Couple more questions...

1- Does anybody use GLPI for non-IT  assets? I would like to be able to use GLPI as a one stop shop for all of my asset tracking needs, but I don't really see a generic asset type to use. I am currently working within the 'Devices' section for my other assets, but I am wondering if this is the best method or if anyone has a better option such as a plugin that would add this functionality better.

2- I've tried reading the code for the amortization calculation, but the French throws me off and babelfish doesn't help, so.... How is Linear amortization calculated? Not being an accountant, linear, to me, means the same value each month, but in practice with GLPI, this is not the case.
e.g. I have a vehicle with a purchase price of $18524.87, with an amortization of 5 years. For this particular example, the vehicle was purchased in Sept 2006 and GLPI shows an accountant net value of     $17300.20, when it should be $13,893.65.

This may simply be a need for an additional Amortization type which simply subtracts the value of 1/nth of the purchase price where n is number of months in the amortization period.

If this is something that could be used by others, I will try and code it in myself, but it would be nice if it were there already.

As a side note, the interface in 0.7rc1 is much nicer over 0.68, you've done a great job cleaning it up!

Thanks for any assistance you can offer!

Re: 'other' assets (non - IT) and amortization question(s)

Hi,

Thank you for your interest in GLPI-Project

1) Actually there is no  generic asset type in GLPI.  This is a previous feature.

2) The amortization calculation is done in respect of the french rules. This is a particular and complexe operation.   You could fine explanation here : http://www.ac-versailles.fr/CERPEG/ress … ements.htm

But i's in french sorry.

Re: 'other' assets (non - IT) and amortization question(s)

Thanks for the response Jean-Mathieu

1. Just to be clear, in the past there was a generic type, but there is no longer? If that is the case, why was it removed? Overall, the Devices section works ok for what I need, but it would be nice to have other physical assets added in their on section instead.

2. I figured that was the case, but wanted to make sure. Assuming that I get time to make this change for myself, would it be something you would want submitted back to the project for future inclusion? Alternatively, would this be something that would be better done as a plugin instead of hacking the code, which could then be submitted back?

Re: 'other' assets (non - IT) and amortization question(s)

1. Sorry ? About which genreric type do you refer ? We haven't removed anything.

2.  Plugin or patch are welcome. To choose between plugin or path, you need to think about the interaction you want  in GLPI.

Re: 'other' assets (non - IT) and amortization question(s)

1 I think is a misunderstanding on my part from your first response:

Given your response, I would like to request this as a new feature, having a generic or 'fixed asset' type such as I would use for a vehicle, building, or furniture.

2. Being a non-developer, I suspect I will just submit a patch or at least the files that I changed

Re: 'other' assets (non - IT) and amortization question(s)

I just had a discussion with a few people around my company and they requested the same sort of thing.  Yes I could go out and get another package to track my fixed assets, but I would also rather do it in one place (preferably GLPI).

For clarity sake, what I am referring to as a fixed asset are items such as file cabinets, desks, chairs, bookcases, etc.

To follow up on another point TheTiGur made, I think I need to re-write or write a different report that does our depreciation as we are in the US and have noticed that it may not work as we need.

TheTiGur, have you made any decisions as to which route (plugin vs. patch) you are thinking of taking?  We have a few people around here that could do some of the coding, but I would hate to duplicate an effort.

Hello,
Any recent developments in fixed assets management plugin? I am also looking for a similar solution.

We are close to having the ability to have F&F as part of our database.  Anyone want to test out the code?

We are still waiting on a review from our accounting department.  It is close, but they pushed it off and I am not sure when they will finish this.  I hope it is soon!..
