providing text-entry boxes by menus

How do you edit a template to provide a text entry box by a menu so that you can
add a value not on the menu, like in Computer Type in the demo at
glpidemo.sp2mi.univ-poitiers.fr?  I have version 0.68.3, as used for the demo and was
surprised to find that the interface only shows drop-down menus in the blank template.

Sorry but :

Text entry box (input box) are not customisable.

You could modify all dropdown as you want.

How would I modify the dropdowns?  Does that mean hacking the PHP, since
the dropdown editor doesn't seem to allow it?
I guess knowing how the demo site is configured would be useful.
